Double Minded

When World War II ended in 1945, the United States played a huge role in helping war-devastated countries rebuild and stabilize their livelihoods. At the same time the US economy prospered as it recovered from the Great Depression of the 30s and WWII. The era of the 50s became known as ‘Happy Days.’

Then they turned the page!

• A huge counterculture revolution began, sparked by college students who staged campus sit-ins.
• Timothy Leary publicly promoted the use of psychedelic drugs and became a well-known figure of the counterculture movement of the 1960s.
• Hippies were ‘flower children,’ lived in communes, and practiced free love and tripping out on LSD.
• JFK was assassinated in 1963, and
• Riots hit cities like LA — Watts; and Chicago — protests that opposed US involvement in Vietnam and interrupted the 1968 Democratic National Convention.

The decade saw many additional positive as well as negative events. It also witnessed the emergence of a crusty, brash female figure who filed a lawsuit in 1960 against the Baltimore schools with her older son, Bill Murray, as plaintiff. He was bullied for not participating in required prayer and Bible reading at school. His mother, Madalyn Murray O’Hair, an atheist activist, took her complaint all the way to the Warren Supreme Court that declared Bible reading in schools was unconstitutional in 1963. The year before, the same court had ruled that prayer was illegal in public schools, as well. Madalyn’s notoriety earned her the title, The Most Hated Woman in America.

In 1963, O’Hair also founded American Atheists and ran the organization with an iron fist from an office in Texas that had a locked room no one could access nor could they touch the fortune she amassed. Madalyn was president of American Atheists until 1986, when she handed the reins to her younger son and Bill’s half-brother, Jon Garth Murray. He was assisted by his ‘sister’ (niece), Robin, whom Madalyn adopted as her ‘daughter‘ (her granddaughter): Robin was really Bill’s daughter by an under-age girl-friend.

Madalyn, Garth and Robin headed the family ‘business’ until an employee found a note on the office door one morning saying that the Murray O’Hairs had left on an emergency basis. After their disappearance Garth ordered $600,000 worth of gold coins from a Texas jeweler, and several subsequent telephone calls from the O’Hairs never explained to American Atheist employees why the O’Hairs were gone or when they’d be back. For five years no one heard anything more from them, and the O’Hairs were thought to have absconded with the money.

Then a reporter took hold of the story and through his investigative research, a former American Atheist employee was convicted of their murders and later took officials to a Texas ranch and the grave sites of the O’Hairs. Findings pointed to gruesome deaths for all three: their legs had been severed at the knees. However, Madalyn’s body was positively identified by her metal prosthetic hip implanted at a Texas hospital with exclusive codes that traced it to the hospital and thus, to the patient!  Madalyn and her team had been brutally murdered (see Madalyn Murray O’Hair)!

But what became of William J. ‘Bill’ Murray, the boy who was bullied at school? He became a Christian in 1980 and later became an evangelical minister.  In 1993 Murray wrote the following:

“In the three decades since this landmark case (Bible reading in school), the nation has lost its moral center.

• • Violent crime has increased from 16.1 to 75.8 incidents per 10,000 population.
  • Juvenile violent crime arrest rates have increased from 13.7 to 40 per 10,000 population.
  • Teen pregnancy has almost tripled from 15.3 to 43.5 per 1,000 teenage girls.
  • Almost half of these pregnancies end in abortion.
  • For a startling 38 percent of all live births in America today, the mothers are unwed.
  • The teenage suicide rate has increased 400 percent since 1963.”

What an explanation for where today’s moral morass came from and why we’re at a cross-road almost 60 years later! God was evicted from our educational system and the national scene. Our children are paying a horrible price and so is our nation!

Our present crisis of lewd sex education and transgenderism invading our schools obviously did not happen overnight, but we are on the way to rescinding the wrongs. The Bible says in Ephesians 5:15-16“…be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.” To make good use of this God-given time, we have to correct bad legislation or introduce new laws that negate actions by SCOTUS. That means we have to elect officials who will represent and support God’s morality values and the family, and who will consider the majority of our students’ best welfare, not the minority’s.

Not only must we vote correctly on November 5, but we must recruit other voters of like mind to come to the polls and cast their ballots, too.
