Note: We have not prepared a questionnaire for the candidates for Attorney General. The Attorney General’s job is relatively specialized. Here is what the Constitution of Virginia says about the Attorney General.

Article V. Executive

Section 15. Attorney General

An Attorney General shall be elected by the qualified voters of the Commonwealth at the same time and for the same term as the Governor; and the fact of his election shall be ascertained in the same manner. No person shall be eligible for election or appointment to the office of Attorney General unless he is a citizen of the United States, has attained the age of thirty years, and has the qualifications required for a judge of a court of record. He shall perform such duties and receive such compensation as may be prescribed by law, which compensation shall neither be increased nor diminished during the period for which he shall have been elected. There shall be no limit on the terms of the Attorney General.

Constitution of Virginia – Article V. Executive

Curiously, the Constitution of Virginia says relatively little about what the Attorney General is supposed to do. Attorney General (state executive office) – Ballotpedia provides functional description of the Office of Attorney General. Here, About the Office (state.va.us), our current Attorney General, Mark Herring, provides his take.

Obviously, the Office of Attorney General is quite important, but it would not be appropriate to use the same questionnaire we used for the other candidates.

We believe that the Attorney General should, unlike other politicians, should strive to rise above politics and enforce the law as written. Hence, we suggest you carefully consider:

    • The integrity of each candidate.
    • The legal qualifications of each candidate.
    • The managerial qualifications of each candidate.
    • Whether you believe each candidate will enforce the law as written or in accordance with his personal preferences.
